It's been announced today that Toshiba, the company behind HD-DVD, have decided to pull out of the next gen DVD wars.
This is of course good news for Sony whose Blu-ray format will now become the industry standard in next gen players in a reversal of the VHS vs. Betamax war of the late 70's.
As far as console sales go, this will most likely mean an increase in sales of the Playstation3 from consumers who have been reluctant to side with either format.
At the same time, this is a bad thing for Microsoft who have thrown their support behind HD-DVD.
We'll just have to wait and see how this actually affects sales. Personally I predict a slight rise in PS3 sales but not nearly enough to beat the Wii.
